Houston police announced Monday that they have arrested 23-year-old Terek Davis, who they identified nearly a year ago as the gunman in the February 10, 2021 shooting.

The 23-year-old suspect is charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to police, Davis was behind the wheel of a westbound Hyundai Sonata on I-610 North near Maine when the 40-year-old father tried to pass. Instead, the suspect stopped the father’s car and hit the brakes.

The suspect then pulled out a pistol and fired at the man’s car, hitting the father once in the armpit and the son twice.

Police said the victims went to a nearby urgent care center for help, while the suspect continued driving on the service road for a few streets as his car broke down as a result of the accident. The suspect then took off on foot on North Main Street.

In the aftermath of the ordeal, state investigators were able to connect Davis to the shooting through the wrecked car’s recording information, fingerprints, and the victim’s onboard cameras, and recovering his cell phone signal that put him in the North Loop at the time of the shooting. Davis’ trip to McDonald’s in Lockwood, a few miles from the shooting, was particularly noted.

The documents show that the McDonald’s receipt at Hyundai led them to the fast food restaurant where they reviewed the drive-by surveillance video and located the vehicle and a person who appeared to be the suspected driver buying food about an hour before the shooting. A Davis name debit card lined up with a purchase made at the time. Investigators also linked fingerprints from a McDonald’s cup in the car to Davis.

Additionally, police spoke with Davis twice in the month following the shooting, once by phone and again at HPD headquarters. According to court files, Davis told investigators that a friend was driving that day, and after being told about the wreck, he decided not to do anything about it because he was not insured.

About a month later in a face-to-face interview, Davis insisted on denying his involvement in the shooting, but identified another friend as the person who was driving that day, the documents read.

It will be another five months before police identify Davis to the public as the fugitive suspect.

Meanwhile, Eyewitness News reached out to the parent who was shot 18 months ago, who refused to speak on camera. He has said that he and his son are 100% physically fine but they are still traumatized.

The father said they learned of Davis’ arrest on Sunday.
